Dr. Kovell is Board Certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been practicing psychiatry for over 30 years, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He has also been active in teaching psychiatry to medical students and resident physicians.
His passion is working together with his patients to find the most effective medication regimen with the fewest side effects, including strict avoidance of medications that carry a risk of abuse or physical dependence. To that end, he has chosen throughout his career to not prescribe benzodiazepines and stimulants, particularly in the outpatient setting. He recognizes that medication is only one small part of a person’s treatment plan, with counseling, physical exercise, healthy diet and supportive relationships playing vital roles in overall mental health.
